Excellent quality
I'm so glad I spent the extra money on this. I just used it today for the first time and it allowed me to whip up a great lather in no time. The mug has a very refined look about it and I think the ivory color is the most elegant. It doesn't show dried cream as the black one might. I thought the squarish shape at the bottom of the mug would be less than ideal, but as it turns out, it gave me a good grip when I held it from beneath (when not using the handle). The three ridges on the inside serve two purposes - 1. to help whip up a lather, or 2. if you use hard shaving soap, it keeps it from sitting in any residual water in the bottom, allowing the soap to dry after use. I highly recommend this mug! UPDATE: I bought Col. Conk shaving soap (puck) and it fits very nicely in the bottom of this mug with just a little space left over. UPDATE 2: You can put a full puck of soap into this and microwave it to melt the soap into the mug. This allows the soap to completely dry after each use since water can't seep in under the puck.

Nice, high-quality shaving mug
Nice, high-quality shaving mug. It is pricey, and I admittedly bought it because I exclusively use Edwin Jagger products and wanted to complete the set, and this looks nicer than many other mugs or bowls or Tupperware. Handle works nicely for me and my small-ish hands, and I much prefer being able to grip the mug rather than trying to cup a bowl. It is pretty small for a lot of soaps...I use Edwin Jagger's smaller 2.3oz soaps and they fit perfectly, but larger pucks don't seem like they'd fit, or would make it hard to work a good lather. For me it works perfectly, and I was willing to pay the higher price for the quality of product, but keep in mind the smaller size before you purchase.

Truly, A Gentleman's Shaving Bowl.
For my recent birthday, my wife bought me an EJ best badger brush (great product). I liked it so much, that I bought an EJ DE89L (also a great product) and this shaving bowl to go with it. Boy, am I glad I did. The bowl looks fabulous and has a very nice heft to it. Mixing up really good lather is a breeze and relatively quick. Being made of porcelain, the bowl retains heat nicely, and the handle is sturdy as well. Yes, it costs a bit more than the competition, but so what ... it may cost about $10-$15 more than lesser or other mugs, but that small difference is well worth it. Also, consider that there's a pride of ownership factor at play here. I feel good and a bit pampered in owning this bowl; it's an elegant product and I think I'm worth the extra few bucks to have it. You can't go wrong with this at all and, if you're like me, you just may crack a smile of satisfaction each time you use it. Highly recommended, as are all the EJ products I've tried so far.

I love this thing
I hadn't used a shaving mug before, so my basis for comparison is only with lathering in the hand or directly on the face. That said, this product increased my enjoyment of shaving immensely. It retains some heat if you let it soak in hot water for a while, so you can actually lather with warm foam. It has ridges on the bottom that speed in foam formation. And while I was skeptical of the little knob handle, it's actually ideal for holding in one hand while your shave brush is in the other. The one downside I have is that it does get water spots easily. That said, I won't go back to lathering up any other way.

Beautiful, Functional, Sturdy Mug by Edwin Jagger
I use this mug with every shave, first to soak my brush and then to whip up my lather. I don't keep a soap stored in it; rather, I load the wet brush from a separate bowl containing whichever soap I'm using, then transfer the brush to this mug. I have found this to be very handy in creating a great, thick, creamy lather, because it has little ridges at the bottom which help to incorporate air into the soap. Also, it retains heat fairly well; I fill it with hot water to soak my brush, then place it in the sink, also filled with hot water. By the time I get out of the shower, the brush is softened and the ceramic mug is pretty well heated. I have often found (though not every time) that by the time I get to my 3rd pass, the lather is still warm! I also love the handle on this thing. You can hold it by the convenient handle, or the bottom of the mug in the palm of your hand;either way is comfortable and easy to do. I am always very careful when handling it, but I know from experience that it is very well constructed and sturdy. While I have never dropped it, per se, there was one time I was getting ready to shave and was getting all of the various gear and items out of my wardrobe in preparation. My wife was asleep on the bed, but angled from one corner at the top of the bed to the opposite corner on the foot of the bed, leaving me a nice space to pile up my shaving gear as I picked out my soap. Well... my wife stirred in her sleep and kicked the mug right off the bed, I should add we have a VERY high bed, down to the hardwood floor. I panicked and picked up the razors, soaps and my beautiful mug; while one of my razors busted into two pieces, the mug was perfectly fine! There wasn't a chip, scratch or crack anywhere in the thing! It had survived a 3 foot drop onto a very hard hardwood floor and didn't have any damage whatsoever. While I would not advise testing its durability like I did, I can tell you that it is of a very sturdy, quality porcelain construction. I should also add that this piece was smaller than I was expecting. I was a little disappointed at first, expecting some giant thing. I have found after using it for the last 6 months that it is the perfect size; easy to hold, doesn't take up too much space in the cabinet and small enough to pack for a trip, which I have often done. Lastly, this is a beautiful piece. It's a very deep, inky, ebony black. It's shape is attractive, while at the same time very utilitarian; it feels like it was made to fit specifically in MY hand! The fit and finish of it is beautiful, as all Edwin Jagger products are. This is truly a piece that could last a lifetime and more. I highly recommend to anyone looking for a great shaving mug. There are cheaper ones out on the market, but I doubt that anything less expensive than this would have survived the fall from my bed; so in my mind, this was money well spent.

Worth every penny!
I was skeptical of paying so much for a soap bowl...and probably wouldn't have, if I hadn't been given an Amazon Gift Card. Boy, am I glad "bit the bullet" and sprang for this little (self-indulgent) luxury! In all honesty, straight-razor shaving isn't only a way to go green(er) and help the pocketbook; it's also an acquired skill and a time-honored art. (After all, I find that "gourmet shaving" is as much about a little daily luxury as it is about an objectively better shave quality and/or lower financial and environmental costs in the long run.) The quality and design of the Edwin Jagger porcelain bowl absolutely blew me away. This bowl is classy, well-built, brilliantly designed, and unapologetically masculine. The ridges in the bottom of the bowl help create the fullest, most frothy lather, and the handle is sized and placed perfectly. It would be a terrible shame to drop and break a porcelain shaving bowl, but this one, shiny as it is, has a very secure and "grippy" design. If you're looking for a high-quality shaving bowl that offers a little something more, look no further. The E.J. Porcelain Shaving Soap Bowl is just the ticket!

Stylish as the photo looks
Don't know what's up with all the people saying it's too small; it's quite reasonably sized. You could fit a 2.25oz Colonel Conk puck in the bottom with some spare space but I don't see the point--if you do that, you won't have as much space to work with, and you won't have the ridges on the bottom to help you work up a thick lather more easily. It looks and feels quality, just like it looks in the photo. It also feels fragile. I wouldn't want to slip and drop it on my counter as I suspect it wouldn't survive the encounter in one piece. On the other hand, the apothecary style handle feels very secure and I'm not actually worried about dropping it. I'd rate it higher but it is pretty expensive for a mug, even if it is porcelain. It's worth it, I'd buy it again if I did smash mine, but it's not an amazing deal or anything. Splurg if you want the extra bit of class for your shave.

A very nice bowl that worked for me.
I bought this as an addition to my shaving set. I really enjoyed it until I accidentally knocked it over and broke it. It was a little expensive considering that you can accomplish the same thing with an old coffee mug but I really liked the Edwin Jagger logo and the fact that it doesn't look like you grabbed an old coffee mug for your shaving set. It looks really nice in the bathroom and doesn't look like you were lazy and left your coffee mug in the bathroom. I also loved the shape and the handle. My brush is not big so it fit perfectly fine and creating lather was not an issue. The off white "bone" color was really nice and quality was great. The size and weight of the bowl was perfect for my hands which are small and I was able to grip it nicely while lathering. I set it down to clean up the sink and knocked it over breaking it but I will definitely get a replacement and take better care not to break one again. I don't like making recommendations since criteria vary from person to person but for me, I was not disappointed and didn't feel like I wasted money but rather felt that I paid for something nice and received something nice that met my expectations.

Worth it! Excellent Lather!
I purchased this particular item as a gift for my brother that introduced me to wet shaving and now I wish I had purchased two! The size is just right for all of the shaving soap pucks I've encountered with some room to spare for any bigger pucks I may run into along the way. The item arrived as pictured, with no chips or damage. Despite being made of a rather fragile material, porcelain, it feels solid in the hands and I imagine it will last forever provided proper care is taken to keep it from falling. The know that sticks out provides a great handle and ensures you get a good solid grip when you're holding this up, even with wet hands. As for its primary purpose, lathering soaps and creams, it performs admirably. I was able to build up a beautiful lather with both VDH deluxe and Col Conk shaving soap pucks. If it can build a beautiful lather on those it should work great on just about anything you can throw at it. As far as price is concerned, it certainly isn't the cheapest option. However, as with most things, you get what you pay for and this will make a fine addition to any shave kit.

Expensive but Real Quality!
I must agree with most all the other reviews. Excellent workmanship and looks great on my bathroom sink area next to my Edwin Jagger Badger brush and drip stand and Merkur razor. The ridges at the base do help to gather a nice lather as well as to prevent shaving soap from sitting in a puddle of water and it does retain heat (I rinse it out with hot water prior to applying my shaving cream). Do I really require such elegance to get a good shave? Of course not. I could use a coffee mug for all that. But it proffers a certain sense of style to what might otherwise be deemed a dreary early morning chore. Love it. Hope it doesn't break!

Turned from so-so to favorite mug
Didn't work for me. First too small. Working up a lather takes way too long and is watery. Too be fair I have never seen a mug that works as good as a bowl. I use a Pfaltzgraff onion soup bowl I found at a close out. Put rubber O rings on the handle for slippage. Holds 12 ounces which is the perfect size. Inside is 2 3/4 bottom, 4" top and 3" high. Outside is 2 3/4 bottom (flares out quickly) to 5" top. The top 1/2 inch flares to the 5" which is nice for wiping brush. Hard to find especially in white. I like lots of space around my cake. After a few uses it will stick in the center there after. I think I have seen metal shaving bowls. Wonder if they would heat up faster and hold heat better. Might try one if cheap. To be fair this is a well made mug and handle fits nicely. If space is at a premium this will fit nicely. Edit - Changing to 5 star now that I have more experience. This works great for face lathering as you just load the brush and lather on your face. My puck is a little on the small side. I can heat my glycerin puck and bowl a little and push down but I like it a little higher. You could shave down the sides on a large puck and put shavings on top with a little water press and let dry. Got your pick. Like the flair so I can load brush fast and not hit sides. I use a Fine Bowl for bowl lathering.

Great bowl, but for the price, it could be sturdier. Mine broke just by knocking up against the sink.
I had been using a coffee mug for several months and finally got tired of how tacky it looked sitting on the bathroom counter all the time. It was dark blue, and so it was always covered in soap spots and a white soap residue. I finally took the plunge on this fine but somewhat pricey mug, and was instantly impressed with its design and functionality the first time I used it to whip up a lather. Getting the ivory color was a no-brainer for me, especially after reading reviews on the black one that mention the soap spot issue. While the black looks classy when clean, this one always looks like it belongs right there on the counter, and has sort of a classic, timeless look to it. Soap spots and residue are virtually invisible - it never looks dirty or spotty. I used this mug every day and loved using it every time. It felt great to hold and the bumps on the bottom made the lather whip up almost instantaneously. I only had to use the tiniest dollop of shave cream (Cyril R. Salter Indian Sandalwood) to get a bowl full of rich warm lather. About a month ago, I had the bowl filled with lather resting in the hot water basin. I went to move the bowl to the side of the basin and I knocked the bowl on the side of the sink. It wasn't a heavy blow - I used no more force than necessary to just push the bowl to the side. But when it hit, it just cracked down the middle and broke into 3-4 pieces. Now I've been without it for a month, and I can't take it anymore. I just ordered a replacement, and fortunately the price had gone down a fair amount, although it is still pretty pricey for a little porcelain bowl. I know the porcelain is as thin as it is in order to allow hot water to warm the lather, but for the price, I wish it was a little sturdier. I don't want to have to replace this thing again, and if it does break again, I will reluctantly look to a different product.

Mine broke after a year
I bought this a year ago and it broke into 2 halves in my hand today mid shave while I was lathering my face. For whatever reason the pressure of my thumb on the handle made it snap like someone chopped in half from the top. I did like the apothecary style handle, it did serve me well from a functional aspect. Poor heat retention was my only gripe prior to its demise. There are others all over amazon that look identical (like they come out of the same factory in China except they have another company logo and cost half as much).. All in all I am not buying a replacement for $30, although I am a bit sad to see it in the trash.

It's worth it to spend a little more on a porcelain bowl
I am so glad that I spent a little bit more to get this shaving soap bowl. Having this item in porcelain has saved me from purchasing a ceramic version several times over. When shaving, one's hands get wet. When one's hands are wet, it's easy to slip and drop an item like this. While the drops haven't been far as I always hold it over the sink or counter, accidents do happen. However, since this is made out of porcelain, it's hasn't broken when I've dropped it. It also has a great weight and balance to it. If I ever give a shaving soap bowl to a nephew as they come of age, this will be the one I give them.

Good shaving bowl but too small
After a few months of using this shaving bowl, I can say it i a decent bowl. It is very well made, pretty, has ridges on the bottom for improving the making of lather. Up until here, very good. What makes me give it a 3 star rating is it's really small diameter. This would be a great shaving bowl if it was bigger. It is only good for my small Art of Shaving traveler size brush. For my regular size Crabtree & Evelyn (made by Edwin Jagger) brush, is very small. All the lather you make ends up getting pushed up and eventually out of the bowl which makes it really annoying. Bottom line: Recommend it if you use a small brush. Definitely not recommend it if you have a normal to big brush.

Fantastic old style shave mug!!!
I love this mug, it came packaged impeccably boxed in the classy black E.J. Box like all their products. It was a little pricey for what it is. But one has to note that this is porcelain, finely finished mind you. Beautifully finished in a high gloss black.( also comes in white) looks great on my counter with my other shave gear. Apart from the aesthetics, it functions as great as it looks. Some reviewers stated that It was too small. I feel that it is perfectly sized to fit in the palm of my hand with the appothary style knob between my index and second finger. The bumps on the bottom help when used with a badger hair brush to make gobs of thick lather. It flairs out at the opening so your brush doesn't hit the sides. Cleans up real nice also, back to the high gloss finish. If you want a mug that is designed great, and complements your shave den, buy it! Heck it's only a little over thirty bucks!!

This mug was bigger than I thought and makes my bathroom counter pop out have a classic regal look to it now. I like to soak my brush and or razor for a few minutes before shaving and you can easily accommodate both due to the capacity of the mug. Very nice finish, nicer than other similar style shave mugs you see at shave stores and barbershops. The heat retention is really good and keeps water or lather warm for 10+ minutes with ease. The handle is very comfortable and fits easily into the hand when picking up to build lather. Overall I do recommend the product. It is on the pricier side but has a very nice finish and is bigger then other similarly designed mugs.

Makes it much easier to lather up.
I use Proraso in a tube for ease of use. Hadn't found a puck that I had the patience for. I had been lathering up on my palm up to this point, which worked fine. I saw this shaving bowl and picked it up on a whim. I filled it with hot water in the shower and let my brush soak until I shaved. I dumped the water and added some shaving cream and whipped it up. Using a bowl makes a DRASTIC difference. I kinda wish the bowl was a hair larger, but it works just fine - it may be the perfect size for most brushes, I don't know. But it lathers up really quickly compared to any other method I've used. And the quality of the later is superior as well. I don't know if it was just me, but it actually seemed like I was getting a better shave with this lather. I think this bowl is a little pricey, but I am definitely happy with it. I can't imagine using a large coffee mug without the ridges on the bottom and the single knob on the side - it's really ergonomic.

Good feel but stained our sink
I like the look and feel of this soap bowl. If it wasn't for one big flaw, I'd give it five stars: It stained our sink top. I was surprised because I assumed it was a glazed ceramic when ordering, and that shouldn't happen. But the bowl naturally gets water around the bottom edge if left near the sink, which I do along with my razor/brush stand. The other day I day I saw two dark blue rings on our ivory colored Corian-type sink top. It took quite some effort to remove mostly, but there is still a faint line my wife and I can't get rid of. Any product designed for use with and around water shouldn't stain when they get wet.

Way too expensive for a shaving mug but it is just sexy as h3ll what can I say. It looks just as good in person, it holds a standard puck just fine. I saw some comments saying it was a little small, that may be the case in some circumstances but for the soap I have it is just fine. Doesn't really create a better lather or anything it just sits there...being a cup. The handle is comfortable for me I don't find it slippery or anything. I think it is that way in case your shaving someone, as in your a barber so you can hold it with your knuckles. That being said I don't find the need to hold an entire cup of shaving soap next to my face while I shave. I have a cat so it did manage to get knocked over and went flying across the bathroom. It didn't break or even chip so very well made and heavy clay, although I would not recommend testing this, eventually I am sure it would break.

I considered using a regular mug to lather up my shaving cream but decided to go for a cup designed for the process; I'm glad I did. The handle on this cup is a little small, so those with large hands may be better off just holding it from the bottom as you whip up face lube. On the bottom of the cup there are small bumps that help the lather get nice and creamy, a welcome feature. My brush is on the smaller size, and fits nicely in the cup ... it's the perfect height. While the bottom and inside of the cup is smaller, the top opens to nice and wide, making easy access and use.
