Covers gray close to 80%
I'm growing out my gray hair, after years of using permanent hair dyes to conceal the gray. But, I don't want a harsh line where the gray roots begin. You know, that "Oh, poor thing, she's letting herself go..." kind of look. So, I'm using this conditioner at least every second time I shampoo my hair. (I usually wash my hair daily.) And, about once a week, I wash my hair, then apply this coloring conditioner to the roots, and leave it on for about 30 minutes before rinsing out. That gives me maximum coverage. I love the effect. The gray is there, but not super-obvious. There's no harsh line where the un-dyed roots meet the permanently colored hair. I'd previously tried the Chi red auburn color, since that's my hair color from when I was younger, and it's the color I've been dying it. But the Chi red auburn color conditioner was too pinky-orange... not at all natural looking. However, it adhered to the gray far better than the Chi coffee bean color conditioner does, so it didn't rinse out much. The problem was... well, auburn (dyed) hair + gray (growing out) + weird pinky-orange areas...? No. That looked bizarre. So, I switched to the coffee bean color, and I like it. It's a good, medium shade of cool brown. I'll need to keep using this product while the gray grows out, at least to a length I'm willing to cut. (My hair is past my shoulders, and frizzes if I cut it short. So, I expect to be using this Chi product for months and months.) I'm okay with that, as a tube of this conditioner seems to last for at least a month. More importantly, I'm delighted with the results. I wish it adhered just a little better to my gray hair, but it covers well enough - and looks natural (not all one, uniform color... that doesn't fool anyone) - so I'll keep using this product, happily. And, oh yes, I love how well it conditions my hair, without leaving a heavy fragrance, or a waxy/oily coating.

Very effective, beautiful shade of red
I've been using this brand of Mahogany Red conditioner twice a week after I wash my hair for about 6 months now on my already red dyed hair. It does well to keep the color fresh and bright. However, it is not a very effective conditioner and my fine hair dries out very easily especially when I apply daily heat while styling. To combat this, I condition my hair with my normal conditioner twice a week, about 2 days after I use this product. Also, this product is extremely pigmented and can temporarily stain your scalp and hands. Depending on how much pigment you want to deposit into your hair, you can change how you use this product. To deposit more color (maybe an initial application to completelychange your hair color), I apply it to my DRY hair and let it sit for the duration of my shower (20 min or so) then rinse in cold water without shampooing. If you're on more of a maintenance routine to enhance an existing red, I dilute this conditioner with my normal conditioner with about 1/3 regular conditioner and 2/3 color conditioner by mixing it in my hand before application. This also helps to improve the conditioning ability of this product. I know this sounds a little complicated, but I really enjoy the shade of red this conditioner deposits into my hair and I don't mind the routine. The smell isn't the best, but again, my regular conditioner improves it. The worst side effect is that when I work out at the gym and sweat, the red dye drips onto my face and clothing and can be embarrassing, but I'm sure that's with any coloring product. Overall, it's definitely worth the price and does it's job as a color depositing product.

It's not HORRIBLE
It did take away the blonde... My hair has grown out so much since my balayage and I didn't want to keep the blonde so I decided to try going with a brown semi permanent dye to help ease the transition. It doesn't look horrible in person but when I buy a dark brown I didn't expect it to look so auburn. Another thing was, it did not dye my grey hairs at all. I dang near used the whole bottle on my head trying to make sure I got all of my hair. It was super hard to spread so my hair was clumping together which also worried me. I have a tad bit left so I may do one more application in a couple of days. As for the staining, I washed my hands well 2 times and used miceller water (prior to showering) and it seemed to help some, my nails are stained (I'd paint them but I can't due to an operation I am having done) but that would be an easy fix. It will stain your items so don't let it sit in the shower or on a counter/sink. I made sure when rinsing out my hair, the water ran clear. I didn't see a stain on my towel so maybe that helped. It did not moisturize or soften my hair, but that's not my reasoning for buying it. All in all it's not a bad product but make sure you know what you're looking for.

Pretty color (applied over cool lavender hair)! Very powerful for a conditioner!
I love this product! I did a lot of research and finally landed on this conditioner to try to tone my light lavender/silver hair into a warmer color. I did my first application over dry hair (used about half the bottle to fully coat it)- It looks more rose or mauvey purple depending on the lighting. I love the color, it's so pretty and just what I wanted! I had blue hair before the silver/lavender and it's been so hard to get the cool tones out. This toning conditioner finally did it! I've been following up with more conditioner twice a week in the shower. Over wet hair it does come out a bit streaky- this stuff is powerful, so if you don't blend it in well on your hair it can come out pretty globby as well. I suggest before using, turn the water off and towel dry your hair and then apply. Brush through it as well to distribute it evenly. I have very dry hair and I felt like it did a good job moisturizing without being too heavy. Did not stain my skin as well- a little clarifying shampoo and hot water and it came off my hands easily without having to use gloves.

Doesnt work too great
So for me the color conditioner attached to my red that was already strong. However, the part that was faded it did not grab at all. It also felt very conditioned while in the shower, however, when I got out it was very dry. I had to actually use another deep conditioner or spray in conditioner. I know it may be hard to tell in the pix but part of my faded red almost looks strawberry blonde after using the conditioner while the other parts look a nice deep magenta pink. I wont be purchasing this again. It just didn't work for me. It does stain your skin so be careful when using it. The smell is tolerable niether pleasent nor unpleasant. But for the price I had hoped it would have worked a little better on my hair. It also does not cover gray hair. I had hoped this would be a good solution for inbetween my coloring my hair but it was sadly a no go. I hope others may have better luck.

Other colors may work, but this one not so much.
So, I used the entire bottle before I decided to review this. I wanted to try this to keep up with my balayage that I currently cannot have touched up due to Covid-19 shutdowns. First of all, it turned my hair blue. It was only after I washed it again and used a different conditioner that I saw the results of the color. Second, it really didn't moisturize my hair at all. You would think that leaving it for 5-10 minutes would leave my hair NOT feeling like straw, but it actually managed that. I bought a keratin conditioner and THAT has helped. It was also a bit dismaying to get it on my hair and then watch as it all ran into the shower drain. As far as the actual color...meh. It lightened parts of my hair, but not a significant amount for the price. I'll probably spring for overtone next time.

It’s not hair dye do not listen to the other reviews, it only really sticks to dyed hair (in my experience) and washes out fully in 3 or 4 hot showers (that also might just be my hair dye fading from the hot water though). I use this in between getting my hair colored because I like having bright red hair, and the base of my dye is orange so putting the red on top makes it look like my hair is fresh all the time, I every other wash or so I use a conditioner with orange dye in it to also keep the color fresher and more consistent. I’ve added pictures of when I’d get my hair done, and then after the use of this colored conditioner.

Best product for cool/ashy brown hair
I've tried many other brands, and this is truly the best brand. This product works incredibly well for people who naturally have dark brown hair and try lifting their hair color levels. When you try to bleach such a dark color, inevitably the brassy orange and yellow tones come immediately. This conditioner has worked as good as the toner in a hair salon. know your starting color
It made most of my hair pretty blue... which faded to white, which is nice. I’ve used this before, but the purple, and I thought the tone that it was now needed more blue because I previously used brass out and that’s blue but I was wrong. I should have gotten with purple for my roots and blue for my ends because they unfortunately were not toned evenly when I last got them done. I am a level 2, bleached and toned to about a level 9/10, so it gets very tricky. But I’ve gotten white before and I used this brand, but the purple one, and I left it in 30 minutes and it was perfect after the purple residue faded. But it will always leave *some* residue on that light of hair. Clarifying shampoo will remove it. Remember to wear gloves, follow the directions, try to part your damp hair and part and apply as evenly as possible as you go through, to get the best results. And know your starting color, whether you lean more toward coppers/oranges or more towards golds/yellows because you are looking for the opposite color on the color wheel to neutralize that. :)

If you leave it on too long it turns your hair purple. Especially if you have damaged hair due to dying. My awesome hairdresser washed my hair with baking soda to get most of it out. But I didn't notice much of a difference in it lightening. But it could just be my texture. It might work for someone else?

Surprised by the results- Happy to Save $$
Really surprised how well this worked! I've been getting my hair dyed for a while but I needed to find a way to refresh my color and save a little bit of money. Super easy to apply. The color is really vibrant and felt like I just walked out of the salon. Next time I might try mixing some colors to see what it does. I used the mahogany color and it is pretty pungent which anyone who is experienced with red colors, that is perfectly normal. I am really satisfied with the results. I will see how it will fade but this feel no different than going to the salon and getting it redyed. The smell isn't the greatest but it is something I can deal with personally. There are certainly worse smells these kinds of products could have. I wanted to share what I did in case someone out there needs more details. - I highly suggest getting one of those hair dyeing kits with the poncho, clips, shower cap etc etc. I didn't use everything but it was nice to have the items there. - Wear gloves, wear gloves, wear gloves. This stuff stains and will look like a murder scene if you're not careful. Have some cleaner nearby and be diligent about cleaning up messes. I found the bigger the blot, the faster and more it stains. - After trying from a small bit of my hair to test the color, I took a normal shower to shampoo my hair and then did the actually application of the toner at the sink. -Be diligent and make sure to tone all areas of your hair (where you want it obvs). You don't want it look inconsistent. -After applying the toner and letting it sit, I wash it in the sink and then styled it like normal. -So far, it stains very much like fresh salon dyeing. It might get on your clothes, your hands when you touch it, and your pillowcase. So be wary.

Great product for those desiring silver locks!
Love this stuff! I’ve always wanted some silver/grey in my hair and attempts to dye it in the last have failed this at least gives it a subtle little tint and I love the shade of silver it turns my blonde highlights! My only negative comment is that it does dry my hair out a bit and being conditioner I feel it shouldn’t do that, so I have tried for the first time mixing it with my regular conditioner in my hand before applying and that seemed to work better. That way I still get the silver and also get the conditioning of my regular condionter.

Color depositing conditioner vs. hair dye
This color depositing conditioner is a great way to add semipermanent color to your hair with softness not heavy chemicals and damage. Super easy to use. Shampoo and condition like isual then towel dry so your hair is damp not too dry though. Then take a dollop of the color conditioner and work it into your hair from roots to ends starting from your forehead and working back to the nape of your neck. I leave mine on for at least 45 minutes or so and then rinse thoroughly. Don’t worry. Just spray some Clorox cleanup where the color is in your shower and it will disappear like magic no scrubbing no muss no fuss. Literally just spray the entire area that is discolored and the Clorox will take it away like it was never there in minutes. Now. Your hair will hold onto the color for a few weeks. The next day after I do the color I don’t wash my hair I just rinse it again and if it’s tangled I will apply a tiny bit of conditioner but I really just want to let all the deposits of color in my hair where they’re at without disturbing them. The following day I shampoo and condition. The color will keep rinsing out when you shower for a few days. The more you disturb it the less the longevity of your color. I do this treatment about every 2.5 to 3 weeks. And the color stays pretty vibrant. I also combine the dark chocolate with the red auburn to get a sort of henna colored look. Red does fade really fast so about halfway through when I am between treatments the red auburn is almost gone and it’s just chocolate with a faint faint hint of auburn. This color is highly effective. It lasts pretty well if you don’t fuss with it aggressively while it’s on there. And it’s not greasy or gross texture it leaves your hair really soft and shiny. It smells really good too. Hurray for hair color that doesn’t smell like a chem lab. I like this product a lot compared to regular semi permanent box hair dye because it doesn’t strip your hair it just deposits color into it. So if you have very coarse or porous hair it will work better and last longer. However if you have super healthy shiny hair your hair cuticle may not accept as much of the color deposit as it would on someone with coarse hair so buyer be ware if you have nice hair you may have to get ms. Clairol to beat it up some for you for a color to stay in and this chi product may not be for you. Or you can just plan to treat more often. Choose your own flavor of involvement.

Natural-looking color without using a permanent hair color
I use this conditioner in "Coffee Bean" to give my ashy medium blonde hair a richer color. It's a little messy, so I use a dark colored towel and wear nylon gloves to keep my hands from getting stained. Even if I leave it on for just a few minutes, it leaves a nice color that looks natural. I have very dry hair and I don't think it dries my hair out more than it already is. It seems to add some softness. I wash my hair daily and still see some color for a day or two after using it. I plan to get more when this one runs out.

I color my hair with IGK movie night and then once a week or 2 I put this Chi red mahogany conditioner on my dry hair and let it sit for about 30 minutes then I shampoo and condition as usual in the shower. This really deposits color!
It was much brighter than I was expecting, but if I had read the description below the color name - that probably would have tipped me off. I have dark hair with light highlights and it really popped on the lighter hair. As it's started washing out - it's much closer to what I was expecting. It definitely did what it said it would do.
