Top quality razor that competes with the best of them
UPDATE: 1/7/2014 - Now that I've had this for a couple years I thought I'd update my review. Not much to say... I still love the razor. The chrome is still flawless an rust free. One item worth mentioning though is that I recently started shaving with a shaving oil SHAVE SECRET SHAVING OIL- THE BEST SHAVE EVER! 18.75ML and it's amazing how close I can shave using the oil. But the oil on my hands is making it a little more difficult to grip the razor since the handle is smooth. Just thought you might like to know that. --- I own several double-edge razors. The Edwin Jagger DE89BL is the most recent addition to my shaving arsenal. I'd honestly have to say it is my favorite razor. First of all, as others have mentioned, it has the most beautiful chrome finish I've ever seen on a razor. It just exudes quality. Even the underside of the head has the same, flawlessly chromed surface as the rest of the razor. Although the handle is also chromed and smooth, it does not really slip in the hand as you might expect. That is so because of a nice little double-lip near the top of the handle that let your fingers just naturally fall into as you hold the razor. There is a "just-right" heft and balance to the razor as well. It's just a tad lighter than the Parker 91R Parker 91R Super Heavyweight Double Edge Safety Razor and 10 Shark Chrome Blades, another razor that I own but significantly heavier than the Merkur model 180 Merkur Model 180 Long Handled Safety Razor, my second most favorite razor, to date. The handle length of the Edwin Jagger razor is very comfortable in the hand. Compared to the Merkur model 180 , which has a handle length of 3 7/8", the handle on the Edwin Jagger is 3 3/8" or about 1/2" shorter. Weight, length of handle,aggressiveness of shave and finish are all personal choices however, so my opinion is not the definitive statement on the subject. I am only telling you my observations and my personal preference. There is no doubt that the chrome of the Edwin Jagger is certainly of equal, if not superior, quality to the Merkur model 180. I prefer the heft and chrome finish of the Edwin Jagger and find the "aggressiveness" of the shaving to be equivalent to the Merkur 180 and not as aggressive as the Parker 91R. The Edwin Jagger DE89BL is a fine safety razor worthy of your consideration.

The Safety Razor Shaving Experience and Products- Take Time to Enjoy Yourself !!
This is a fine Razor. Properly weighted and well balanced. Build quality, Fit, and Finish are all superb. You will not be disappointed with this Razor. The blade reveal or exposure is not aggressive, and in my opinion it not necessary in any razor. . . more blade reveal simply means more opportunity for cuts and nicks. Take a minute or two to read my thoughts below on the Safety Razor methodology and related products. I'd like to give a small summery of my experience with shaving the past 40 years or so. Like most guys, I am always in a hurry, We have alot to do a just not enough time in a 24 hr. day to get it done. If there were 36 or 48 hours in a day we would work all of those too. Right? The world is full of work and we have allowed it to rule our lives, its just never going to change. Here's a good quote to keep in mind "If Nothing changes, then Nothing Changes." Alright then, how about letting go of the Throttle for a few minutes and treat yourself to change in your daily Grind? Our shaving experience can and should be enjoyable and the little bit of additional time it takes to engage the Safety Razor experience will allow you to clear your head, gather your thoughts, and think about the day ahead as you shave instead of throwing on some propane propelled Edge Gel or other bottom of the barrel shave cream product. Yep, just look at the ingredients on the can, most of them contain propane. Keep the propane for the BBQ grill out in the back yard, not on our Face. We are all aware that that the well known companies of our day have done a great job of advertising and convincing us that their razors are the only thing on the market. They started with two blades - the old Trac Two, then three blades, and now they are up to five. Crazy isn't it? And cost of their blades has risen right along with the blade count. A Safety Razor has one blade with two edges, that's all that is necessary to get the job done, and done well. Not only that, each blade is much less money than multiple blade cartridges on the market that are so popular today. I have listed the items below that you'll need to engage in the Wonderful, Relaxing, safety razor shaving experience. First all, ditch your Edge or similar shaving gel's and other canned products. All of them are weak and dry out your skin - Forget about ALL of those. Purchase these quality items below, and believe me, you will never go back to what you were doing before. So you'll need to buy shaving cream, I really like "Taylor of Old Bond Street - Sandlewood" There are several other shave creams like this on the market, but the aroma of this product is simply remarkable. You will also need a bowl to mix the shaving cream, I like wooden bowels; the metal one's get cold but wooden one's do not. You'll also need a Quality Badger Hair (or similar) Shaving Brush, there are many of them on the market at all price points, but it really pays big dividends to get a quality one. Buy yourself a quality safety razor like the Edwin Jagger DE89bl Chrome Plated Razor I have reviewed. Also a pre-shave oil is highly recommended so look into those as well. So now with your Edwin Jagger safety razor, a Badger Brush, Wooden mixing Bowl, Pre-Shave oil or Oil soap, and Shaving cream you now have likely been set back $100.00, but its all going to be well worth it. Lastly, when you are done shaving, finish the job by applying Neutrogena Razor Defense to your face and then your favorite cologne. Neutrogena Razor Defense is a very, very soothing & comforting lotion - why apply something to your face that stings and burns the Hell out of you?? Bad idea! All of these items are going to last you a long time. So spend some time familiarizing yourself and become SKILLED with your new gear, watch a couple of YouTube Videos on the subject and get ready to be pampered and very impressed. Why hurry? Work will always be there waiting no matter when you arrive. You'll never go back to what you were doing before.

Terrific razor. Beuatiful finish. Very forgiving and advertised to be excellent with the sharper/sharpest razor blades.. The handle is slightly longer than most standard handles and that is a PLUS. (but not as long as the purposely "long" handled models out there. 3-piece means you can clean this very well, as well as make it flexible to customize and interchange parts as you see fit (i purchased the highly touted iKon Bulldog handle for this.. works great.. not as pretty as this razor handle, slightly shorter.. may go back to the original handle.. that's how nice it is). IF YOU GET THIS RAZOR - BARLEY GRIP IS THE WAY TO GO b/c it has the most grip out of the 3 available (smooth vs lined). The barley doesn't give tons of grip, but its the one that gets themost ouf of the 3 you can order - and still pretty! That being said... remember that the blade has a LOT to do with your shave experience and closeness. So it's also great news that this razor has a reputation of being VERY good with the sharper blades (I've used Personnas with them, will be tring Feathers soon). Personnas worked well but either they just et dull easier and thus prone to causing irritation burns - or sharp blades are just that way in general. Will find out when i try the Feathers blades. This is a great first or any razor. Guarantee you'll love it. Guarantee it'll be in your top rotation if you get it. And if performs as advertised with the Feathers - what more could you ask? Smoothest most forgiving razor coupled with the sharpest blade available i Feathers? Can't wait to try! UPDATE: So I received the Feather blades and just as advertised, this razor works BEAUTIFULLY with the Feather blades. It felt SO SMOOTH and worked WONDERS! I never felt in danger or felt it was anymore dangerous than my mild Astras. In fact so much so I've had problems figuring out which one i prefer.. the Astras or the Feathers. (The Feathers do wear down more quickly than the Astras - but also nothing has gotten me smoother than the Feathers either). So just to tie all ends.. yes.. this razor is like in perfect harmony with the Feather blades. Another huge plus. (BTW I allso have the much touted competitor Merkur Safety Razor (3-piece version of the Merkur 34c). No comparison. EJ razor is much more comfy, much more smooth, shaves much more closely. The Merkur ripped up my face and a lot more aggressive to the skin. NOT so friendly with the Feather blades.

Waited too long to try a DE safety razor!
Like many others, I got sick and tired of buying low quality and overpriced disposable blades, but still preferred shaving with a blade as opposed to an electric shaver. That being said, I was about to upgrade my electric shaver when I first started reading reviews about old school double edge safety razors and decided to hold off on the new electric. Glad I did. After several weeks of taking my time to make a decision, I went with the Edwin Jagger De86bl and at this point have no complaints. Everything about it seems high quality and built to last. Now, as I'm fairly new to shaving with a DE safety razor, I did have some concerns and questions. Here's a kind of mini FAQ I put together based on my own concerns: I'm concerned I'll slice up my face with one of these things. Will I have to be super careful compared to using, say, a Mach 3? -No! It's not a straight razor and they do call it a safety razor for a reason. I've had no more or less nicks than with the Mach 3 which is what I previously used. That being said, yes, you do have to use a bit more finesse than with modern disposable blades and you can't just "slam" this kind of razor against your face the same way either. Before purchasing, I watched a few "how to" YouTube videos which were pretty valuable to help start off right. Like most experienced people say, let the weight of the razor do the work -- not so much pressure is needed as with the disposables. The Edwin Jagger DE razor look really nice, but won't the smooth handle be slippery? -Maybe only a bit slippery if you let your fingers and the handle get wet. Keep your fingers and the handle dry (not hard to do) and your grip will not be a concern. Shaving with this safety razor started out fine the first several weeks, but now I'm getting more cuts and nicks! -You may have gotten over confident with your handling of the razor and forgotten to let the weight of the razor do the work and/or shaving too fast. Back off on the pressure and take your time. -Change the blade. Remember one of the great benefits of going this route -- the blades are cheap! All these YouTube videos talk about doing multi-passes and how long you should work up the lather with the shaving soap -- is shaving going to take forever now? -No, not forever. It will probably take most people longer, yes, but I find the process kind of relaxing and the extra time isn't that much. Besides, the number of passes is up to you and your individual "beard management" needs. So far, very happy with this product. I also recommend the Van Der Hagen Men's Luxury Shave Set, which I ordered along with this razor. Enjoy your s(h)avings.

As good as modern razor and ridiculously cheap blades
This is my first safety razor. I hadn't heard of them until a week or so before I bought this one. I was tired of paying $16/month for a name brand razor and my barber recommended I go "old school." I'm hooked. I will say that the short handle was surprising when I first opened the package but it actually handles very well. I do not find it slippery either and have used it in the shower. Although I bought it for function and cost savings, I have to say the thing looks amazing- like a work of art. The chrome is top notch work and I like the black handle. The Derby blades do a good job for me as well. As for using it, I have to say I was nervous going in with the razor sharp blade being exposed. I watched a bunch of online videos and was fearing the worst for a break-in period. I found it really isn't that hard or that tricky (except for right under the nose- that takes some effort). It is easy to feel when you have the right angle. You just have to take a little time and let the weight of the shave head do the work. It is surprisingly satisfying the sound it makes and the feel of it working. I'm not one for nostalgia either- I never watched my grandpa shave with a safety razor or anything like that. I think the closeness is comparable to a modern 5 blade cartridge razor. I need to take a second pass with both to get real close. And I break the rules and go against the grain with both and lived to tell the tail. This may give just a touch more irritation but nothing terrible, especially for the price. As for cutting myself, there haven't been any major blood lettings. You do have to be extra careful around any blemishes or moles- the blade will nick them before you know it (they are as sharp as you imagine). Other than that, it is amazingly simple. I don't know why people stopped using them. The only caution I'd have is not to get too sucked in by the safety razor/old fashioned shaving fanatics. I think some of the irritation complaints I see on these razors for sale (all brands) is because people change everything at once and go to the traditional soaps too. My first shave with this razor was terrible. On the second shave I learned it wasn't the razor but the cheap shave soap I bought at Wal Mart and my lack of lathering abilities. No matter what the purists say, it is okay to use canned shave cream while getting used to this (or forever). I did and it was great. I've since bought some nice shave soap that I like but am still working on a proper lather. When I'm in a hurry, I go back to the gel. I definitely intend to stick with using this razor. I may even end up collecting them. If you get it, just make sure you let you kids know it isn't something to touch. The thing looks so good, little fingers may be tempted.

never going back to disposable
i decided to take the wasteful, disposable plastic elements out of my life, and was more than ready to eliminate disposable razors. i did some research, and realized i wasn't yet ready for a true straight razor and the almost strict religious upkeep factors of them...i wanted a middle ground. i researched online and through amazon, reading the reviews of a ton of this type before settling on this one. it came, and my face and i are extremely pleased. right off the bat, the heft and quality show how well made it is. i'm a gadget man, and i love how things work- so opening the razor to replace blades is more fun and fascination than a chore. i'm amazed the solution to a great shave can be so simple. the metal is all heavy, solid (steel?) with a thick, smooth chrome finish you don't see on anything anymore. this isn't going to flake off or turn color...it has to be at least a millimeter thick or more. or is this what true, good stainless steel is supposed to be like? either way, it's solid. the handle is well made and i don't forsee it falling apart. the handle is thick black plastic, but in that retro way, not cheap and modern. i do wish the handle was just a LITTLE longer, but that's just because i'm used to the longer handle of disposables. i'm already acclimating to it. why is it not 5 stars? well,the one point that i worry may fail in the future is the razor head screwing into the handle, with the razor bed resting between them. it 's only friction-held, nothing snaps or locks in, and the parts are so well chromed, friction is achieved by tightening the heck out of it all- which i fear may strip the threading one day. but maybe that's just me being used to cheap products- in all other ways, this razor seems built to last- the kind of thing that if we'd gone to atomic war decades ago, this would have been pulled out of the rubble and used by a scruffy-faced survivor. it's that retro, well made and solid. oh and the shave! well, i'll let you discover that for yourself. you will want to have a bonfire for your old shavers- disposable, or electric. this is the only blade i've used that actually gets the hard to cut hair just below the jawline. if that's not worth $30, what is?

Pretty razor-cheaply made
Pretty razor-cheaply made. Thought I'd go with a good razor to eliminate any questions in my mind re inadequate result from a "beginner" razor. Gave me a good shave. Handle was slick, necessitating frequent hand drying while shaving. Within 2 wks I dropped it on the floor-bath rug over tile-soft landing. The head screw snapped off showing cheap pot metal. $42 gone in an instant. Now buying a Murker because of its reported stoutness. Update: Contacted the company and they replaced the head for free. Took a little time, but I subscribe that to the company being across the pond. Bought a long handled Merkur and used it while waiting. To contrast the two: Merkur is 1/2" longer, but the EJ has better balance and weight. Both give a good shave, but the EJ is more comfortable. If it holds up, I would now give the EJ 4/5 stars, losing one star because it may break again. I'm a relative newbie to DE shaving. Wanted a closer shave and less shaving bumps than I electric shaver was giving. Thought I'd get some disposable razors and a can of shaving cream and I would be good to go. After reading the reviews of this razor, I realized there was a lot more to a good shave than just wacking whiskers. I shave everyday because a 2 day growth on a young guy may be sexy to women, but on an older guy-you just look homeless. In addition, I'm not a primper. I have a face that makes people intimate I should be hiding under a bridge asking 3 questions before I allow anybody to cross, so I don't want to spend long periods looking at my mug in the mirror. But DE shaving w/ a good blade, razor, and soap is so enjoyable that the drudgery of shaving now becomes a relaxing experience. It takes me 12-15 min. to shave(3 passes-with, across, and against the grain) instead of 3 min. w/ my electric. Just realize that w/ a lot of choices of razors, blades, shaving soaps, after shaves, etc., you now have taken on a new hobby. Doesn't take a lot of time and is very inexpensive. As to the latter, don't scrimp and buy cheaper stuff and wonder why it is not a comfortable experience. The difference between a Cruz and a Malibu in DE shaving is only $5-$10. If you want the Lexus in a product, it still is not going to break the bank. Enjoy your new hobby.

Good, but learn how to shave!
I wanted to wait until I had been using this thing for a while before reviewing it. I've now been using it consistently since May, so after 7 months, here's my feedback: 1. I have had no issues with rust or the finish falling apart. If cared for properly, i.e. all parts rinsed and dried after each shave, it still looks like it just came out of the box. 2. Handle length doesn't bother me. I have big hands, but I have also never used a longer handled safety razor. Maybe if I had experience with longer handled razors, I would be complaining about this. As it is, the weight and length feel very natural to me. 3. Shave closeness: If used properly this thing cleaves through hair, much closer than I ever got with my cartridge razors, especially after a second pass. 4. Blade replacement is not as easy on some models, but I don't consider it that much of a pain. I take the whole thing apart after each shave and wash and dry the two pieces of the guard, the blade and the handle, so I'm used to handling the razor and threading it onto the little pegs and screwing the whole thing together now. But, it is true, there are other razors with much easier blade systems. 5. Blade is not adjustable, which some people are going to look for. I originally purchased this razor specifically because it is recommended as a beginners safety razor. It is not very aggressive and it is not adjustable, which are things that might cause a new DE shaver to cut or nick themselves. Not that this thing won't cut or nick, but if you go slow while you're learning and you read up or watch some tutorials, you'll be fine. I've only had to bust out the styptic a couple of times in my 7 month experience with the razor. It also is not in the highest price tier for razors, meaning that it's a great combination of cheap and easy to use but high quality. I make a habit of always reading the worst reviews first and then making my way up to four or five star reviews, and the impression that I got from reading the one and two star reviews was that people weren't holding the razor at the right angle. This sucker needs to be at a 45 degree angle to your face or it won't cut anything. You shouldn't be dragging the guard across your face. Held properly, the only thing in contact with your skin is the tip of that razor blade. And it will shave the hair down to the pore when held properly. And that's not like, hating on those people. Shaving with a DE razor is complicated, there's a reason we moved as a society away from DE razors to cartridge razors. When shaving you need to consider blade angle, blade pressure (which should be none) and the grain of your beard (first pass should be with, second pass across, third against if you feel you need it and it isn't going to chew your face up). You also should absolutely not be using canned goop from the drug store, please spring for shaving soap/cream and a shaving brush. If that sounds like a lot of hassle to you just to shave, then don't buy a safety razor. I was shaving every day with a cartridge razor, and moved to shaving every other day when I started using this thing just because I could get away with it at work. Oh, and finally, not a huge fan of the razors that came included with the razor. I'd read some reviews and spring for better razors, maybe. I'm honestly using the store brand ones from my local drug store, and I feel like they're giving me a better shave than what came with the razor.

Great DE Razor
This is my first purchase of a single bladed razor, and I'm glad that I switched. Along with it, I also bought the Colonel Conk Evernice stand, a Tweezerman's shaving brush, Proraso Shave Soap, Proraso Aftershave lotion, a blade sampler pack, and an alum block. First Impressions: When the box arrived, I was surprised at how small it was. The length of the whole thing is only about 3.5 inches (9 cm) long. Even though it is small, it is sturdy and feels well built, and the chrome finish looks amazing. Also Included in the box was a pack of Derby blades which contains five blades, enough to last the time until you buy some more. The Razor: This is a three piece razor, consisting of a handle, the top piece which the blade fits into, and a lower piece that slots in between the blade and the handle. They fit very well together, the handle screwing snugly into the top piece to create a single unit, with no chance of the blade wiggling or the handle accidentally becoming unscrewed. The handle is smooth and shiny, but I have not had any problems with grip when using the razor. As I mentioned earlier, the chrome finish is amazingly well done and makes the whole razor look very shiny and good looking. It goes very well hanging in the colonel conk stand with the tweezerman brush, and would probably do just fine with other stands/brushes. The Shave: It is a great experience to shave with this razor. Before I got this unit, I shaved with a traditional multi-bladed safety razor. I have a shower mirror, and usually would shave without lather. While it does take more time, It is a great experience to whip up a great lather with a badger hair brush and apply it to your face. It is a sort of a soothing experience to shave, and is both relaxing and a good way to wake up in the morning. I have actually had less irritation shaving with this razor than with my old multi bladed one, though this could be more due to proper lathering and pre-shave practices than the razor itself. Since I have started started shaving with the Edwin Jagger DE89bl, I have actually cut myself shaving less, and on the occasions when it does happen it is usually an indication that the blade requires changing. Final Thoughts: If you're thinking of getting into DE razors, you won't be disappointed if you get this one. It is a quality razor, and will last practically forever with proper maintenance. That being said, if you are new to it, make sure you know proper shaving techniques and have the materials necessary for a consistently good shave. Overall, this is a great razor and you will not be disappointed if you get it.

Took the plunge and loving it
Update below - Original Review: This is my first Double Edge razor. I was looking for something that was well reviewed and not too pricey. That's how I came to find and ultimately purchase the DE89bl. I purposely did not shave for a few days before the razor arrived. I wanted to see how well it would handle a few days growth. I also might mention that I have sensitive skin, so I am always looking for the least irritating way to shave. I have been through lots of multiblade systems that work OK, but I cringe at the high price of replacement blades. The fit and finish of the razor is flawless. I am really pleased with the heft and quality of it overall. It comes with a starter pack of Derby blades, which by all accounts are a mild blade and good for beginners. I can't offer any perspective about how they compare to other blades, but they worked quite nicely for me. For my first shave with the razor I lathered up with some Taylor of Old Bond Street, Mr. Taylor's Shaving Cream. I used short strokes and rinsed the razor frequently. There's an excellent video on youtube "How to Shave with a Safety Razor" that is worth watching if you are new to DE shaving as I am. The results are really quite amazing. Not only did it handle my thicker than usual growth, the shave was quite easy. A multiblade razor would have required a lot more effort to accomplish the same results. The area under my chin and around my neck have always been the most difficult to achieve a close shave. **Not any more!** This is easily the closest shave I have had short of my barber giving me a straight razor shave. (Which I get with nearly every haircut.) The results: Nice and smooth and the irritation to my skin was minimal. Tomorrow's shave with only one days growth should be that much better. The best part is the $$ saved in the long run. No more budget busting multi-blades for me. DE blades are inexpensive and readily available. The DE89bl should pay for itself in savings in just a few weeks. ******** Updated Review: Having lived with and used this razor for several months, I would still recommend it for anyone looking for a new double edge safety razor. It is fairly forgiving and provides a satisfactory shave. Having said that, I no longer use it daily. It is now one of three DE razors I own. The other two are vintage Gillette's which are still widely available online. I no longer use Derby razor blades in any razor. I tried several brands from a sample pack and found that I get the best performance from Personna Med Prep blades in all three of my razors. Your mileage may vary and I encourage you to try several blades in whichever razor you ultimately buy. Finally, after every shave I still have that feeling of "Wow! That was great! Do other people know about this? Someone has to tell them!"

First impressions - Wow!
Okay, I'll state clearly that this is purely my First-Day-Review. However, I must say that as I was working through my first minute of shaving with this I asked my wife "Where has this been all my life!?" I'm in my 40's so I remember my Dad's DE razor fondly but I've fallen victim to shaving most of my adult life with the usual, big-brand-names with ever-increasing blade counts (3, 4, 5 and counting!). However, the highway robbery which is a five pack of cartridges for $15 finally galled me enough I said "No more!" I enjoy shaving. I enjoy the few minutes spent doing fine trimming and shaving (I have a goatee so I only shave neck, jawline, cheeks). I was prepared for a long session with this new razor but not so. It's included blades gave me an awesome shave in no time at all. It just requires deliberate, thoughtful strokes. The razor is heavy - surprisingly heavy for it's size. It's a bit "small" in terms of handle length but I gather it's "standard" as far as DE razors go. I was positive I would have had a problem with it being too short but to my amazement the finger-tip grip with handle gently rested into my palm was actually a perfect form-factor. For a starter (and probably long-term) razor this is beautiful. The chrome finish is heavy, shiny, the handle is deep and shiny blank and it's gorgeous. The weight, again, is heavier than it looks and that's a positive thing for letting the weight and mass of the razor do the work for you rather than flipping the shaver around like you do with plastic cartridge styles. I would have given a fifth star rating had there been a bit 'more' for extra value for the price... a simple stand or larger sampler of blades or something but 4 stars and my being very pleased is where it's at! I'm very glad I got this particular model in general but also in particular over a butterfly style because I had concerns of the blade being a little out of alignment. However, whether that would have been the case or not - the blade on this DE86 is perfectly aligned and held rock-solid in place. I look forward to shaving with this today because I want to - not need to. If any of that changes I'll post new impressions. For now, though, I'm thrilled with this razor and the fact it sets me up for cheap blades into the future.

I’ve literally been using this razor since 2013. I have the chrome one, and it still looks the same. Sometimes I clean it thoroughly, but I usually just rinse it off. I use astra razor blades with it and recommend you do too. It’s nothing too fancy, but the simple design means it’s reliable and easy to use. I get a very close shave.

Holy awesome razor Batman!
I'm still kind of new to the safety razor world but this is my second and I will say it's night and day from the first one I had. I was set on getting either Merkur or Parker but after 3 months of research, I accidentally stumbled upon Edwin Jagger and had found the fewest (legitimate) complaints. The construction is solid and am shocked this is their low end model. Price paid (at the time was $35) which I find a STEAL! I'm happy to see that E. Jagger didn't sacrifice quality for us "99 Percent-ers" considering their upper end razors are $100+ My first shave was amazing. I've been using safety razors to shave my head for the past 6 months comparing it to my other "Made-in-China-Cheapo" was like going from a Hyundai to a Cadillac. It has a smooth handle and I did not find it slippery as well. I don't know what you call the underneath part of the razor, but the general area that gets clogged with hair and shaving cream, is really wide so you can keep shaving until the goop falls down into the sink. I don't rinse my razor after each pass so that feature is great! My other unit also used to cut me when using a new razor--until about the 2nd shave is when I didn't need to be as careful. This Edwin Jagger did not have that problem. The blade/head/angle seems to be spot on haven't cut myself yet. [knock on wood] I will be definitely be buying a second one as a back-up or for my travel kit. I know a few people I will be giving as a novelty/introductory gift for a bday or christmas. The razor comes in a nice looking box and is packaged like it came from Saks Fifth or some ritzy store. **For those who never used a safety razor and are looking for a cheaper alternative might want to buy a trial $5 cheapo before investing $30+ in a safety razor. I get about 5-8 shaves (of the head) before I swap out the razor which is the same for a Mach 3--except these are $1/blade --One Year Later-- I have since switched to shampoo vs shaving cream and shave soap and this razor shaves even better than its former awesomeness before. *Shampoo technique--same as using shaving soap. Small amount in my shaving bowl, foam and apply. I leave the bowl not too thick of foam and do the most of the foaming part on my head which keeps the foam wet longer and also exfoliates. Foaming with shampoo also has the hairs all sink to the bottom so I can rinse my hands or razor without parting the sea of floating gunk. Furthermore, my razor doesn't clog up as much and rinses out with only 2-3 swishes--no tapping required.

Absolutely perfect!
So, I've had this razor for almost a year now, and I figured it was time to review everything again. If you're a first time buyer, I would recommend reading the end carefully as it could save you a lot of money. So, when I first bought everything I did a good amount of research on each item to ensure I was buying items worth the money I was going to spend. So far, the razor is outstanding. I have to admit, I have cut myself pretty good at times when I was trying to rush, (mostly on my ears oddly) but if taken a little longer to shave, this razor beats all of the 50 dollar packs of razors. I was shocked at how well it cut my hair and beard with just one blade. I was worried at first that the razor would rust over time, but there's no sign of it yet, so I'm not worried anymore. The blades are great. (Featherlite Platinum) I shave my face and head every 3 days and I get around 5 full shaves before I swap out. I think I could get more, but I don't want to push it, and that's 2 more shaves with the Fusion Proglide 5 blade system. ATTENTION NEWCOMERS When I purchased everything I did it all, and then I found out that I didn't really need some stuff. Razor - Of course. This razor is rated best for beginners and long time wet shavers. Blades - Absolutely. Featherlite Platinum blades have the best reviews. I bought 30 when I started a year ago and still have 5 4packs left. Proraso Preshave - Not really. It's ok, but not a starting necessity. Proraso Shaving Cream - Nope. Good stuff don't get me wrong, but I can buy two cans of Gillette Sensitive for half the price of one tube, and I don't have to find the English translation on the proper mixture or even mix it, and it works just as well. Proraso Aftershave - Smells great, works great, so it's up to you. Shaving Mug - if you don't mix your own cream, you don't need it. If you do and want to save money, use a coffee mug. Shaving Brush - Only if you make your own cream. Shaving Stand - It's up to you, but if you have a brush I'd say yes. Travel Case - I didn't buy mine from Amazon because they didn't have a case just for the razor, so I saved 20 dollars by shopping for a cheap one online elsewhere. I found a nice leather one through a "wet shave" shaving club with no membership. All in all I spent 168 dollars buying everything, but you can save more then half not buying what you think you don't need. Good luck, and I hope that this helps. Hard to believe I've had this for 6 years now, and it's still my daily shaver. Definitely worth it!

Great shave, with caveats
If you don't own a safety razor, then you should. Any decent safety razor offers as good a shave as their plastic cousins at a fraction of the price. I'm a bit of a safety razor nerd at this point, having bought numerous types, and while I own more sophisticated safety razors I find myself returning to this one often for the smooth, clean and pain-free shave it gives. As mentioned above, this Edwin Jagger double edge safety razor offers a really smooth shave. It's got nice heft, is beautifully weighted and gets close to the skin without being overly aggressive - in that sense it's a good choice for those moving to a safety razor for the first time. I've been using this for years and it really cuts through morning stubble. I'll never go back to plastic razors again. A couple of downsides. One: the handle of this razor can get a little slippery when wet. There are variants with better grips than the one I purchased which I'd recommend. Two: be careful above the lip. This particular razor doesn't have the protection of your standard plastic razor and requires a bit more care and patience. Once you get used to it it's straightforward but you do need to pay a little extra attention to avoid those nicks and cuts. If you do that you'll enjoy a great shave that is much better for the environment.

The world of wet shaving - Great quality razor
I have been using this razor since October 2012 I bought this razor because I was sick and tired of spending ungodly amounts of money every month on awful triple-blade cartridge razor refills. I had been shaving with these dreadful things since college, they were all I knew and I was miserable. I was walking through the shaving aisle in the drugstore, looking at the astronomical prices when I realized there must be another way. I made up my mind to find a better way to shave, on a comfort and economical level. I started researching and came across the wonderful world of wet shaving. The world my grandfather and father knew. I found websites and message boards dedicated to this lost art. I discovered a world I thought no longer existed. A place where men used steel, badger brushes, bowls, and shaving soaps. Shaving soaps? Yes, shaving soaps! Not that crap in the can, but great smelling, hockey puck-shaped discs of soap created just for shaving. Real shaving. Man shaving. My search eventually led me to double edge safety razors. After hours of research I decided to go with the Edwin Jagger DE89BL Double Edge Safety Razor in Chrome for my first attempt at wet shaving… and I am glad I did. The razor carries a good weight in its head. It’s very easy to take apart, clean, and put back together. The handle length is perfect for maneuvering and control. I had read some reviews about the chrome plated handle causing slipping. I have not experienced any slipping while shaving, but I make sure to dry the handle on a towel often during my shave. Since I started using this razor, in October 2012, I have not had the need to purchase those dreaded disposable cartridge razors and I couldn’t be happier. The upfront cost of this razor and accessories was obviously more than buying a pack of mach 3s and can of shaving cream, but the long term value is much greater. I bought this razor (which included 5 blades) plus a 100 pack of Astra blades, which I estimate will last me 4+ years, for around $50 total. That’s two packs of mach 3 refills. I use this razor to shave my face as well as my head and it works great for me. It has really taken shaving from a chore to an enjoyable experience. Since buying the razor I have recommended it to a few friends who ended up buying it and loving it as well. It’s a little tricky going from cartridge shaving to wet shaving, but there are plenty of great instructional videos on YouTube that are worth taking a look at. Overall this razor is excellent, gives a great shave, and is extremely affordable. I highly recommend it.

Wonderful razor!!!!!!!!
I was given a gift set that included a Parker long handle razor, Parker badger shave brush, and other products. I liked the set but the razor was sort of middle of the road for me. I can't say what it was exactly but it always left my face sore for hours afterwards. I tried Shark, Sharp, Feather, blades and same thing (although the Feather did not tear up my face - it breezed through my flesh like a hot samurai sword through butter) every time. I did a ton of research and loved this razor more for the looks than anything else. It's from Sheffield, England which I've been to and I like that it's not some cheaply made piece of metal. The chroming on this razor is as thick as I've ever seen or felt and looks absolutely spectacular. The black handle is gorgeous but does not have any type of grip or grooves so be aware of that. The biggest thing about it to me was it was tiny! But it was tiny compared to my Parker long handle and then I realized that the EJ-DE86 is "normal" and that my Parker was the odd man out. I immediately liked the shorter handle on the EJ as I could almost tuck it in my hand, grip my fingers high up underneath the head and use it as an extension of my hand. It makes the natural movements around the neck and those odd places like the jaw line under the ear and over the adams apple much more natural feeling. The Parker long-handle is a twist to open (TTO) design which is quick and slightly safer than the three piece design of the EJ-DE86 but not better. With the TTO design I always felt that the blade wasn't being held firmly or that blade after blade sat exactly in the same place time and time again. The blade does all of that in the EJ-DE86. It feels as though the blade is at one with the razor when it's twisted down tight. The safest way to put a blade in the razor I've found is to turn the two parts upside-down on the counter and set the blade down onto it, steady the top, and screw in the handle. Once it's on there you can pick it all up and tighten the last little bit. So far I've only put in the Derby blade to the kit (Derby comes with the razor) and it went through my whiskers nicely on the first shave. The second one was a little more rough. I purchased a mixed sample pack of blades and look forward to trying them all out. This is an immensely superior piece of kit for the price! I love it and it looks gorgeous sitting on the sink! Pick this up!

I would just like to thank Edwin Jagger for making such a quality product, and releasing me from the handcuffs of the wildly expensive Gillette razors, and making me actually enjoy shaving. I really thought that I would just have to accept a lifetime of tug and pull shaving and razor burn and dreading when I would have to shave. I have very thick coarse facial hair and shaving with Gillette razors has been a process of multiple passes, usually with a lot of tug and pull and therefore many accidental cuts. Until I started researching single blade razors, I had no idea that the blue rubber on the bottom of the Gillette razor was holding bacteria and putting it up under my skin everytime I shaved, therefore giving me pretty bad razor burn afterwards with all the cuts I would get on that awkward area around the top of my adam's apple. I went through all the different creams and aftershaves and yet I still had razor burn, and that explains why. I never actually thought it was the razor itself that was the cause. I had researched this product but was a little leary due to the price and the fact that I didn't know whether or not it would actually work better than anything else I had tried. I received the Edwin Jagger just under a month ago and boy am I glad I ordered it! At first I had a few cuts just from not being used to the different technique you need with it and the very light pressure required to get a smooth shave as I was used to pressing those awful Gillette razors hard against my face to get a proper shave, no need for that with the sturdy weight of the Edwin Jagger, you merely have to put it on your face and pull down and that hair just shears right off. I write this review after shaving a beard of 2 weeks growth. With the Gillette razor, I would have to painfully shave for about 30 minutes to get a decent shave when my facial hair got that long, last night it took maybe a couple more passes than usual, and I had a super close shave with barely any cuts, just an amazing product, and I love the fact that a 100 pack of replacements is only about $8, so essentially a lifetime of shaving has cost only about $45 with this amazing product, whereas $45 gets you maybe a few months of those wildly overpriced Gillette replacements. I should alkso point out that I have shaved with this razor with just some shower soap applied to my face, I can't imagine how amazing the shave will be using the good stuff like the Proraso with the brush and lather that a lot of the other reviews on here talk about. I am a very happy customer with this product and it is already worth every penny only a few shaves in! If you are on the fence, I would absolutely recommend this as I was as skeptical as anyone that a razor could make such a difference and make shaving enjoyable again while also saving your wallet in the long run, just an amazing product, my only regret is not knowing about this when I first started shaving, I would have saved probably at least a couple hundred dollars on Gillette razors that I wouldn't have had to buy.

Smooth As Butter
This is a fine looking razor for sure! the chrome is outstanding! This is my first time using one of theses razors and I was expecting to have a few nicks and cuts that come with this style of shaving. To my surprise it was very easy ! the new style of these kind of razors really make it simple ! I am 6'4 and I was worried about the razor being too small for my hands but it really fits nice! and maybe that's the key thing so you don't mash it down on your face ,And the head of the razor has a nice weight so it gives it that just enough pressure to keep it gliding down nicely ! I watched a couple of you tube videos before I attempted this and the one guy named geofatboy gave this razor a great review and makes it look easy shaving hahah! So let me say this ! its my first time using this type of razor and it works great! I used my wifes shaving cream and it worked great ! went right through 2 weeks of scruff ! Im not as hairy as some men but there was enough hair on my face to clog a reg razor and this razor stayed clog free! I took my time doing it and really I could have gotten away with one shave ! it looked good! there was only one spot under my jaw that I could feel like there was a little stubble and it was only because I was a little nervous doing it , I ended up shaving twice and let me tell you who is reading this post, you really get a smooth shave! I read things about a BSS baby smooth shave and laughed ,But I will say they are right on the mark !! And to be honest I bought this razor because I was tired of paying 30 bucks for 15 razors that I am gona throw away ! they say you can use the DE razor a few times before you have to change the blade what is not to love about that? this is gona save me some dollars for sure! I may just go and order the 100 pack of these blades and be done for years ! And on another note myself im gona be getting the mug and brush to complete it ! so if your thinking about going to a DE do it! it really is a cheap shave and works great! coming from a first time user! Quality!
I've been shaving every day for 5 days with this razor (paired with Astra blades), and this is my impression: The build quality is excellent - the chrome is super-shiny, the pieces fit together snug, the blade becomes perfectly aligned to head, and the design has a nice flow to it. The handle is suppose to be short for this type of razor, but I've found that I get the most control the closer to the blades I hold it. The handle in this area has a nice little flange to grip between two fingers and a thumb, so someone was thinking when they designed this. The black handle is $10 cheaper than the chrome handle, but the black lacquer feels nice and smooth, and the handle still has a nice heft to it. The chrome handle looks nice, and if you can afford it you should probably get it, but it makes absolutely no difference in the shave quality, so I suggest putting that $10 towards some good shave creme or blades instead! The only thing I don't like about this razor: on close inspection there's a bit of burr on the corner-edge of the head piece. This tiny bit of metal has been chromed over, so it's not sharp, but I can feel it against my skin when I shave and it's a like a tiny, tiny annoyance in an otherwise perfect razor. How this passed inspection I do not know! I think I may take a tiny file to it to see what can be done - I can't RMA it because then I'll be without a razor! This was not enough to dock a star. Maybe 1/16th of a star? This provides a VERY close shave! It leaves my skin feeling smoother than the disposable razors I wasted a ton of money on, too. I nicked myself a few times the first couple of times I shaved with it, but apparently your skin needs to become acclimated to it because now I don't cut myself any longer and my skin feels better. Grown-in hairs have disappeared nearly completely, in only 5 days! What else? Oh! Do NOT attempt to shave against-the-grain with this on your first time using a double-edge razor! Like I said before you'll need to acclimate your skin to using this type of blade against it, and beside that you'll need a little practice with the angle before attempting. Furthermore, some people like to re-lather and shave in multiple angles - the effectiveness of this probably depends on your skin type - I found that one pass of the razor cuts about 99% of all the hairs - an extra, small, careful pass in problem areas is enough to get the rest without re-lathering.

Shaving Nirvana
I don't usually leave feedback, but I wanted to on this product for all the men (and women) sick and tired of the exuberant prices charged today for your typical razor. I started shaving as a young adult with a typical 2 blade plastic razor. Then the 3 blade came out, which was a great improvement. Soon, the 5 blade came out which I switched to. I honestly couldn't tell any difference and the fat blade area made it difficult to shave in areas. So eventually I switched back to the three blade. Over the years, the prices of these razors have sky rocketed. So, I fired up my trusty Amazon to see if I could get a better deal. I happened upon these DE razors, and said what the heck, I will give it a shot. Glad I did. After a month of use, from tough shaving where I haven't shaved in days, to everyday shaving (and I also shave my head)... I honestly have no clue why men switched from these to the plastic disposables. The DE by far give the best shaving experiences, shave closer than anything I have used before, and my skin feels a hundred times better. For once, it doesn't "hurt" to shave, the DE glides over easily removing pretty much everything, flip it over and glide it over again and you are done. I can't explain how frustrating those disposables are. You get a few hairs stuck in them and you have to dump the thing. There were times I went through 2-3 razors after not shaving for a while while completely massacring my face with those things, each time cursing how I just threw out 2-3 bucks just to shave once! Not with a DE, the thick openings keep the hair out from clogging, even if it did just unscrew it a bit and clean it out. After a week of use with the DE I was hooked. I ordered in a bristle brush and some shaving soap and found shaving Nirvana. Two things I will mention. My hands are a little on the larger size and I would have preferred a longer handle as this one tends to get "lost" in my hand as I swing it around to use the other side of the blade or maneuver it. Secondly, the Derby razors I got are decent. After some research, I bought 100 Astra Stainless Steel razors and they are far superior in my opinion. At around 13 cents a blade delivered I am able to shave my beard and head twice easily before switching out blades, so you are looking at around 3 cents a shave if you just do your beard! And if you want the best shave, throw the blade out after one use, it's 13 cents, not going to break the bank! I am never going back to the nonsense the shaving companies have raised me to "believe" about disposables. I get a bit sick to my stomach just thinking about the money I spent over the decades, the frustration I have had, and the torn up skin to boot. And LADIES, try these on your legs and thank me later!

THE best shave a man can get!
What I liked: 1. Quality. 6 years later and still in brand new condition. That's assuming you clean it routinely. 2. Price. Considering the cost of the today brands, you're getting an excellent product for the price. 3. Initial purchase is more than a cheap one at the store, but the long run savings is astounding. 4. Design. The 3 piece design is simple, effective, and ensure years of trouble-free use. What I didn't like: Nothing. I have no bad thing to say about this. Like any of you who are probably reading this you are,and in my case were, sick and tired of the outrageous price of cartridge razors in the store. Sadly, like many of us, we didn't think anything of it, or thought there might be a less expensive alternative. When I saw a box of cartridges were $25, I was fed up, so I started looking things up and watching youtube videos. This razor was the end result, and as someone who considers himself simple and can always find easy ways to save money, this is one of the choices I am most pleased with. The build quality is superb, and though there's not necessarily anything wrong with the butterfly style safety razors like the one you can get at your typical department store (which I own), I prefer the simple screw on three piece design of the Edwin Jagger. And the walmart one was more aggressive shave so it was rougher on my skin than the Edwin Jagger. It's a great starter razor until you discover your skin type and how aggressive a shave you wish (The EJ is listed as 2.5 out of 10 on a table I found on how aggressive a shave the various brands give, so if you have sensitive skin, it's great. In terms of monetary savings, I've spent $45.28 on blades since I started using mine in 2012 and I still have over half the package left. Worst case scenario, I was spending $25 every six or so months on cartridge blades before, and that's $300 over a six year period. If you consider I still have half the package left, and that's sharing with family, the cost savings is more than substantial, and more than makes up for the initial cost of the razor. I'm not trying to be offensive here, but you're stupid not to at least try this razor if you're serious about how much you spend of something you use routinely. I recommend the knurled or lined texture handle for grip. Thanks for reading.

I bought this razor in my first foray into wet shaving, in June 2011. It was so good that I never had to buy another--until last week, when finally the screw attaching the head to the body broke. I'd say it was a disappointment, but can I really say that about a razor that lasted me thirteen years, which I used nearly every other day? It was also in otherwise pristine shape when it broke--it hadn't lost any of its plating or anything like that. An exceptional product in an age of otherwise disposable garbage.

Maybe not the best, but assuredly not the worst, definitely a fine article that any gentleman should be proud to own and use.
This is my first foray into DE. I plan to pick up a few more razors and build myself a nice little arsenal, but in the meantime, I think I chose well right out of the gate. First off, my hands are big; too big for most XL gloves, not quite big enough for XXL. Lightly held between thumb and forefinger, this thing rests perfectly against the crook of my index finger, and feels almost like it's part of my hand. This razor has a solid feel, and a nice heft. Considering my very limited experience, I think it's well made. I read a review that its elegant chrome on cheap pot metal, but I'll wait and worry about that when (if) it becomes an issue.It's really a beautiful piece, though. Just sitting on it's teak stand on the counter provides a sort of safe, masculine feel in a decidedly female dominated bathroom. I digress. It arrived quickly, and like a child at Christmas, I tore into the box and straight to the sink to play with my new toy. A nice hot towel, rich, soapy lather of Col Conk's bay rum shave soap applied with my new best badger brush. Man oh man, what a manly experience. Suddenly I felt like Chesty Puller himself, getting that close, inspection ready shave I always longed for in the Corps, but couldn't acheive with my issued Mach 3. Shave complete, I rinsed my face, applied generously my Alum block, and splashed on my Captain's Choice Bay Rum aftershave. The smells, the tingle, this is the ritual I've needed all my life to start my day with confidence. Hipsters, keep your scraggly beards and stupid mustaches. I enjoy keeping my face combat and inspection ready.... Then the razor burn. God damn, the razor burn. My Dreadnought shave oil arrived the next day, so three days later (I'm a fast and heavy beard grower, but I actually had a full twenty four hours of smoothness for the first time in my shaving life) I tried again. Amazing. Smooth, and close, no razor burn, the girlfriend loves the smell and feel of my freshly shaven face; I, sirs, humbly present to you this DE razor. Maybe not the best, but assuredly not the worst, definitely a fine article that any gentleman should be proud to own and use. I have since upgraded to personnas, and they fit well in this razor, they're a little sharper than the derbys, and feel a little thinner. I've also switched to Taylor of Old Bond sandalwood shave cream, and think I've got a pretty good set up now.

The Best
Update 11/13/2013: Well, it happened. I was at a hotel and the razor slipped from my hand and fell onto marble flooring. A good 6' 3". It landed at just the right angle and the cartridge which holds the blade snapped off from the handle. The handle screws into the cartridge and the threads broke off into the cartridge. I tried using thread taps, JB Weld, superglue and a drill press but the threads are too small and soft to get out effectively enough to still re-use. I contacted Amazon about a replacement and they said it was past 30 days and to contact the manufacturer. I contacted Edwin Jagger, a British company, and never heard from them after several attempts. So I gave up. Now, I just use the cartridge with a blade by itself. I've basically turned it into a mini-straight razor. I think I might actually be getting a closer shave out of it now :) Thought I would update this to let you know that this razor can indeed break if it falls the right way. I learned how to shave on a Gillette DE that belonged to my grandpa when I was 15 or so. It was probably at least from the 40's and was a solid performer. I never did get my own and eventually I stopped DE shaving when I moved to college because it was much quicker to just shave with those multi-blade garbage razors. Sometime ago, because of cost, I switched to disposables that I used to pick up down at RiteAid/CVS. Well, recently I needed to shave a 7 day beard, pulled out my new disposables and ended up with the worst shave of my life right before a dinner party. It took three razors for one shave. I was so livid, that the next morning I looked up DE razors and searched for about a day or two before deciding on this one. It has a nice weight, great chrome finish and I love the lines on the handle. Highly recommend this razor if you are getting into DE shaving or to add to an existing line-up. I also purchased this DE for my brother and a friend as gifts and had another friend buy it based on my recommendation. All three are happy and satisfied to get a fantastic shave and finally be free of the expense of cartridge shaving. I recommend this Razor for anyone that desires to be a Free Man while looking good being free again.

A great starter DE razor
Let me preface this by saying I am new to method shaving and this is my first safety razor. I am writing this after a couple weeks of use so please keep in mind this is a newbie review and not a expert. With that said, so far I am happy with this safety razor. It is very sturdy, has a nice finish, and seems like good quality overall. The only thing that make it a 4-star review is the handle. It is a little short for my liking and the smooth chrome finish (while being beautiful) is a little slippery when wet. It's not so slippery that it is hard to use, but I think I would prefer having a better grip on this. I also could use a little longer handle since I have bigger hands. For it's size, though, it is nicely balanced and the handle isn't a major stumbling block. As far as the shave goes, it took a little getting used to but the quality is great. I get a very close shave and after using a couple passes, the smoothness of the shave is better than any other razor I've ever used. I'm using Personna Double Edge razor blades (this came with some Derby blades that I haven't tried yet). I've had a few nicks and cuts but I know that is all my technique and not the razor or blade. I will update this later after I've had more experience with it. Update: After 6 months of use, I'm very happy with this razor. While I still wish it had a better grip, it isn't a major deal. I have had only a couple of times when it felt slippery. As far as being small, I haven't minded that at all after months of use. I get an excellent shave and I would highly recommend this razor.

Like it, but with a few caveats
So I wanted to switch to a safety razor (also apparently known as a double-edge or DE razor) because I was sick of paying big bucks for replacement blades on mediocre commercial razors. Plus, they tend to get gummed up and just don't work so great in my opinion. I was a little nervous because so many reviews of DE razors indicate that you should also be using a fancy shaving cream and an expensive brush. I'm one of those people who waits until the last possible minute to finally roll out of bed in the morning and thus I don't have any extra time to add anything to my routine. If it takes an extra 30 seconds to work up a proper lather with a brush and shave cream or soap, that's 30 seconds I don't have. I wanted to continue to use cheap canned shaving cream which, while possibly not conducive to the best possible shave, is inexpensive and quick to apply. The reviews of DE razors almost make it seem like you MUST use a fancy brush and the best possible cream, so I was a little nervous about ordering the Edwin Jagger razor. Fortunately, I can tell you it works fine with cheap canned shaving cream. No problems at all. As for the razor itself, it is well build and solid feeling and does a very nice job. I haven't tried any other brands of blades yet, as the included ones seem to work fine. I find each blade lasts almost a week, which is pretty good considering how cheap they are. I do, however, have a few nits to pick with the Jagger razor: 1) The handle is too short. I'm guessing they make the handle so short in order to discourage you from using too much pressure and cutting yourself. Fair enough, as you could potentially slice and dice your mug pretty bad if you hold it like a baseball bat. But as it is, my ring finger and pinky don't even fit on the handle, so it's a bit odd. No big deal, but odd. 2) Comparing it to my dad's DE razor from decades ago (no idea what brand), his had a cool butterfly mechanism. If I remember correctly, you pushed a little button on the side and the top gently popped open for you to change the blade. The Jagger requires you to basically disassemble it. You have to unscrew the handle and take the head unit apart. The first time my wife saw me standing there with the shaver in 3 pieces her comment was "You broke it already?!" I explained to her that that's the way you're supposed to change the blade, but I have to admit it really does feel like you're breaking it. I know that giving it a fancy opening mechanism would mean moving parts, and moving parts would mean potential failure, but still... it feels like there's got to be a more elegant way than dis-assembly to change the blade. 3) There is no way to tell which side of the blade you already used. It really should have a little mark of some kind on it - Side A and Side B or red dot/blue dot or something like that. That way you would know "I already used Side A yesterday, so I'll use Side B today." Unfortunately there is no such marking, and thus no way to tell how much each side of the blade has been used. This is actually my biggest nit and I'm frankly shocked that the designers have not addressed it. Operationally though, it works great and produces a very close shave. Nits aside, it is still a pleasure to use.

The greatest personal care item I've ever purchased!!!
I've had this razor for about 10 years. I think I paid closer to $50 back then...this razor has been great! I just did a thorough cleaning on it, as pictured. The last time I bought blades was in 2018...I went through a lot of different blades finding the one I really liked. I've tried so many razors over the years; this shaves smooth, doesn't pull like the multiple blades, and I would say, over the last 10 years, I've spent less than $70 shaving.

Literally snapped in half in the middle of my FIRST shave with it.
This product just arrived a few days ago. I was a little skittish immediately because I wasn't prepare for how cheap it felt in my hands. 95% if the weight is in the head and the handle itself weighs almost nothing. Extremely top heavy, but I figured whatever, it got a good review on reddit so I'm sure it's fine. I start my first shave and after about four passes the handle just fell off and into the sink. You can see from the picture that it's just plastic that's glued together. Awful. Short of it falling apart as I took it out of the box I don't think it can get any worse than this. Save yourself the time and effort and just pay a little more for something that's actually well made rather than this disappointment.

Cracked inside
I've used this Razer (and the same one that I had before it which broke) for years! The current one I have though cracked inside the handle and now can fall apart any second which is not comforting when you're shaving with a very sharp object. The first Razer I had cracked because I dropped it which is fair. I have no reason why this one cracked and I'm very bummed it only lasted for a few months

An ode to the side of my thumb
Had this razor work great for three years. While changing the blade today the threads on it have degraded. I found this out the hard way by losing a chunk of flesh from the entire side of my thumb. Threads tightened all the way as normal. One last little snug turn to tighten - and goodbye to the side of my thumb. The threads at the end wore down enough that a slight turn at the end loosens the whole mechanism and the blade was free to do a 360 on my thumb. Absolute worst type of failure because there was no user error. No sign of an issue. I hang dry and clean it regularly and hang it to dry after every shave. No signs of rust ever. Just a threading that failed in the worst way possible.

Poor Quality Construction, non existent customer service, look at other razors
Shaves nice but poorly made, chrome is chipping off the top and flaking. Very poor materials. Will be looking to repkace it with a different quality made product. Contacting the company they do not respond. Do not waste your money on this poorly constructed product and non existent customer service. Would give it "0" stars for construction.

A conversation starter, that's for sure.
I purchased this razor while I was on my second tour in Afghanistan because... well, if you've ever been, you know you get bored and need new things to occupy your time. One of those "new things" was trying out wet shaving. I sold the idea to my significant other ("You want to spend how much on a razor?") by claiming a net savings of hundreds of dollars a year on razors alone. I shave my head as well and can easily spend $20 on the old cartridge razors in a month. But with a safety razor, I can get 100 blades for less than $10! hooray! After reading quite a number of reviews and even checking out "the" wet shaving forum (yes... they have a forum for everything nowadays) I was directed to either the Merkur line of razors, or the Edwin Jagger line. Honestly, what sold me was the length of the handle... and the fact that these razors are chrome plated at the same location Rolls Royce parts are chrome plated. What can I say? I'm a sucker for gimmicks. Did I say gimmicks? Well, scratch that, because I dropped the razor within a week on my way to the latrines, outside, in the rocks. Yes, it dinged the blade all up, but the chrome plating was no worse for the wear. Very quality stuff! A word of caution, however: if you shave your head, like I do, you will cut yourself. Often. I have been doing so for two years now. It sucks. Another word of caution: if you are the kind of person who hates interacting with other people,mor distrusts folks who seem to show an interest in learning about you and what you do, do not buy this razor. You will be asked, constantly, "what is that? Do you like it? That's so cool... How long have you been doing that?" Etc. etc. etc. Overall, if you're into wet shaving or thinking about trying it, I can't say enough good things about the Edwin Jagger razor, for the face. Even the blades this thing comes with (Derby) are the best I've tried so far... and as mentioned above you can get 100 for less than $10. But if, like me, you are a head-shaver as well... be prepared to get nicks. Lots of them. All the time. And if you manage to figure out a way to *not* get nicks, be prepared to e-mail me and let me know how in the heck you do it.

Premium Classic Razor
I chose to give the Edwin Jagger DE89 a five star rating for various reasons: -THE DESIGN- the de89 is crafted from what seems to be a quality metal and chrome plated to give a very appealing look both while in use and when/if displayed. The photographic representation of the smooth handle seems to stimulate the most questions about this product. People are questioning whether or not the handle is slippery due to its smooth design but I am giving my honest opinion, it is not slippery at all with the materials I use (C.O. Bigelow Shave Cream and Vander Hagen shave soap). I even handled it with wet soapy/lathery hands and still managed the proper grip while shaving. One thing I really like about the de89 is that is has a little bit longer of a handle when compared to my original Micro Touch One and some of the Merkur razors out there. I would also like to highlight how the de89 holds the razor in place--- when compared to my micro touch one, which uses a silo-door configuration to open up and hold the blades, the de89 uses two pieces to sandwich the blade and it proves to be an amazing fit which doesn't provide uneven pressure on the blade resulting in a crinkle effect like the micro touch one does. Overall, the de89 is a simple, yet flawless design that makes for a very nice shaving experience. -THE PRICE- I added this item to my wishlist after doing some extensive research on razors as well as reading and watching a lot of product reviews online. I also watched the video of GeoFatboy (wet shaving proponent) on youtube using the Edwin Jagger and he seemed to love it! When I first added it, the price was somewhere around $98 which didn't seem right so I wathed it for a few weeks and it dropped down to about $30 (which GeoFatboy quoted it at) and I bought it. Don't just look at the $100 price and move on, prices fluctuate. -SHAVE QUALITY AND RAZOR BLADES- I have only shaved once with this razor, using the included Derby razor blades and I got a very nice, close shave. I have been using Dorco blades for awhile and I did notice a small difference in sharpness of the blade but i still had a great experience shaving with the de89. With the proper technique and the right arrangement of shaving supplies, anyone can get the closest quality shave of their life. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who is seeking to invest in a high quality double edge safety razor that is going to be appealing to both their face and eye. Cpt. S.
