Difficult to get onto scalp, disturbing amount of hair loss.
Unsurprisingly, the consistency of this product makes it hard to work down to scalp level. The best way to do it, as far as I could find, is to painstakingly part your hair and apply directly to the scalp in sections before working it around. What really bothered me about this product was the enormous amount of hair that I lost immediately after using it. At least 8-10x more than usual. It kept coming in clumps, long enough that I was sure it was all coming out and I’d be left with a few stringy hairs by the end of the shower. In the end, it was a small handful (compressed). My hope is that it simply works loose hairs that were on their way out anyway, and that I’ll therefore see a reduced amount of loss for a few days or a week.

Good, Not Great
I have mixed feelings about this product, which I have detailed below. For reference, I have fine, shoulder blade length, balayaged hair with an oily, sensitive scalp. Pros: - Contains salicylic acid: Sometimes styling products, dry shampoo, and deep conditioning treatments cause small breakouts along my hairline, and the SA in Crown treats these. Particle Size: the grainy parts of the scrub aren’t too big, so they’re not uncomfortable on your scalp. I’ve used other scrubs with bigger, more jagged grains (namely sea salt) and had to be really careful about overdoing it on the scrubbing. Not with this. - Smells Nice: not overwhelming, not too perfume-y. Clean, light, and fresh. Cons: - Amount needed: the directions for use day to use a “walnut sized amount.” I tried to to get away with using less (because c’mon, this stuff is pricey) and no dice. I absolutely had to use a walnut sized amount in my hair. - Convenience: this scrub had a learning curve for me. The first time I just applied it to my wet hair like shampoo and it did nothing. The next time, I wet my hair, and made several little parts in my hair with my fingers, applying the product to my scalp as I went along. This worked so much better, but took some time. If you have thick hair, I could see this becoming tedious and taking forever. This is not a quick treatment I could do in the morning before heading out to work. I used this scrub on a weekend night when I knew I wouldn’t be rushed. It also took forever to rinse out. Bottom Line: the results of this scrub were nice but not great. I’ve used better, and will not repurchase after I’ve finished the tube.

If you want squeaky clean hair, this is for you
I'm military and have to wear my hair in a bun for 16 hours a day, 7 days a week. This stuff is a life saver for me. It cleans all the gunk (hairspray, etc) out of my hair-- way better than shampoo alone. Other reviewers didn't like how you have to really work the product into your scalp. I don't mind, I do it meticulously because the end product (squeaky clean, full, healthy hair) is worth it.

Great ingredients + results for dandruff!
I love this stuff! I try to stick to R+Co products because I know the ingredients are the best for my hair and I love the packaging. I randomly started getting dandruff along my hairline a month or two ago and nothing seemed to be helping and I saw this newer R+Co product and thought I’d try it out. It has definitely been helping gradually. Yesterday I noticed big flakes and dryness in the bathroom mirror so for this mornings shower I used the Crown scrub on my trouble spots, scrubbing it in with my fingertips. When I got out of the shower all of the flakes were gone. That doesn’t mean it won’t come back but I won’t have to worry about flaking today so this is a great solution so far.

Can’t be without it
I love this scalp scrub! I have an oily, itchy scalp and color processed hair that tends to be dry on the ends. This scrub does it all, cleans my scalp, doesn’t strip my color and leaves my hair soft, clean and easily styled. Love it so much I put it on auto delivery which is rare for me. Bought this product to try and rehab my scalp after many many years of balayage drying it out and a harsh Northeast winter, but not really sure whether or not it is doing anything to improve the health of my scalp. Definitely has not cut down on flakiness or itchiness whatsoever. A nice "side effect", though - the volume this product provides to my next-day hair is unreal. After using this product and air drying my medium length, mid-thickness hair overnight I wake up with the hair at my crown as if I had backcombed it.

Awesome product!
I get dandruff as the seasons change and so far there’s been nothing I can do about it. For me it’s just tiny flakes of dry skin, but nothing moisturizing helped. This actually removes all that dead skin while being gentle and adding a lot of shine. Love this.

Love this line and product
I have very fine, oily hair with dry ends. Its really hard to find products that clean my hair without weighing it down and/or drying the ends. I don’t ever write reviews, but I have to for this! I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy with a hair product in my life. This is exactly the product I never knew I needed! great clean feeling without strong smell
This is a pretty good scalp exfoliator, even if it does require a bit work. Another reviewer said they couldn't get it down to their scalp. It is tricky to get down to the scalp in some spots, and I don't even have thick hair. One thing that helped me was putting a dollop of the product on my hands, add a little lightweight shampoo, a drizzle of water, rub hands lightly and slide your fingers through the hair onto the scalp. The shampoo helps lube the fingers to get the scrub in there. And once its there it massages in really nicely, it feels like a coarse sugar scrub. Not much in the way of smell, and there is no tingly chemical or menthol sensation after that some people are put off by. It did dry my hair out a bit, but that is probably a me problem.

Bought for dryness and flakes. Smells good but does nothing for my problems.
I bought this for my dry, flaky, itchy scalp. I have sensitive skin and my scalp has always been more oily than not, but this past winter has caused a flare up of scalp issues. I bought this to hopefully minimize the dryness and flakes but it’s so thick and the “grits” in the scrub are on the larger size making it harder to apply directly to your scalp. I’ve found it easiest to do it in sections that way I’m conserving more scrub. Even after using it twice a week for a few months I’ve noticed no change in my scalp.

Not for those with thick long hair
This product is really high priced but I was willing to try it as I have dry patches on my scalp that I struggle with. Problem is that for someone with super thick hair, it’s really impossible to get this product to my actual scalp - even with wetting my head and then putting into a bun and trying to get just to my scalp. It’s smells amazing and makes your hair squeaky clean (not sure that’s a good thing). I had high hopes but just not effective for me.

Got this as a sample in a Birchbox. I had only previously tried one other scalp scrub, which I couldn't even get to penetrate my thick, wavy-to-curly hair down to the scalp to do anything. I had a little more success in that department with this, but it still didn't really do much. My main dislike: the smell. It's gotta be the combo of the sage extract with a terpene in the formulation, but it smells an awful lot like celery. Now don't get me wrong; I love celery, but not at 7 AM in my hair. That should remain a celery-free time. This is one of the few products I've gotten in a Birchbox that, say, I would ask for a receipt were it given to me as a gift. No thanks.

Impossible to get through
The first time I didn’t section my hair it was nearly impossible to move the product. The second time I used it I sectioned my hair into four (and I cut my nails short so that the product wouldn’t get stuck there) Still nearly impossible to move the product on my scalp just ended up getting stuck in my hair and when my hair dried it was oily. I’m better off using the neutrogena anti residue shampoo. Doesn’t leave my hair oily and is affordable.
